Worship
The Sunday morning worship experience at
Takoma Park Baptist Church draws on many sources for its content. It is
largely a planned experience, but we also make room for the Spirit’s
leading. Many of the pastor’s messages come as part of a sermon series.
All preaching is Biblically-based, and during two months of the year
special effort is made to study one entire book of the Bible.
Special Celebrations
One source for worship planning at
our church is the pattern of worship developed by the larger Christian
movement over the centuries. The seasons of the Christian year are honored
-- Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter - along with other
significant festivals: Christmas Eve, Watch Night, Transfiguration,
Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity, Christ the King.
A second source for worship is our
participation in Baptist life. We celebrate several Weeks of Prayer for
missions - in the national capital area, the United States, and the world
- and take offerings for those mission causes at those times. We generally
share in other Baptist-identified occasions as well: Baptist Identity
Sunday in February, the Day of Prayer for World Peace in August.
Still another source for worship themes
comes from the larger culture: Black History Month, Mothers' Day,
Fathers’ Day, Independence Day, Labor Day.
And we have developed some items of special importance to our congregation:
Annual Theme Sunday, when the pastor preaches on the focus for the
church’s activities for the coming year; Deacon Ordination Sunday;
Remembrance Sunday, which is done in memory of recently deceased members;
Graduate Recognition Sunday, when members who are graduating from high
school conduct the service and are given scholarships; the annual prayer
emphasis in September.
On at least two Sundays a year, worship
is conducted entirely by our choirs. Two adult choirs, a children's
choir, and a youth choir supply music leadership. We encourage everyone,
from children to seniors, to sing solos, play instruments, or otherwise
"make a joyful noise unto the Lord." For congregational singing, we
draw on the resources of the Baptist Hymnal, the African-American Heritage
Hymnal, and contemporary worship songs.
