"My Neighborhood As A Child-"Lydia Jenkins"

My neighborhood as a child consisted of two areas in the District of Columbia. The first neighborhood was in northeast Washington at a time when they allowed chickens and gardens in the neighborhood. My father decided to bring a pig from the country but the health department informed him that pigs were not allowed in the city. When we lived in this section of the city, the site where Evans Junior High School is located was all woods. Our neighbor found a large black snake in the woods. There were probably many other animals living there but we never saw any of them. I went to two newly constructed schools, Richardson Elementary and Shadd Elementary. Then we moved to northwest and I went to Whittier Elementary School with white students for the first time in my life. The new neighborhood was filled with many new adventures. I graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School and about 50% of my class were white students. I attended D C Teachers College which is now UDC.
